father time

If time were on our side,
we would be invincible,
stuck in this moment
between our lasting youth
and our growing responsibility,
carefree and in love.
But there are not enough
hours in the day,
or days in a year
to nurse our desires.

Time, the old fool,
cares nothing for lovers;
each second of our lives
feeds his need to exist.
Although one might argue,
wasn’t it he who brought
us together in the first place?

We don’t need magic
to coexist together.
All we need is that connection
between heart and mind,
hand and eye;
visible between interlocked fingers,
translucent from one heartstring
to the other.

Time isn’t on our side,
nor is responsibility,
but in these everlasting moments
we can imagine
that time doesn’t exist
and responsibility doesn’t grow.
We can pretend to be
forever young and
forever in love.

And when we wake from
thoughts and dreams of
everlasting and forevermore,
Father Time will remind us
that our youth is expiring
and he stops for no one.
